Homework Expectations

As part of our whole school homework review, we sent a survey to parents in November 2019 to gauge their views on how we currently set homework at Days Lane. There was a mixture of opinion amongst parents, with some highly valuing homework, whilst others felt they wanted to enjoy the time they had with their children without the pressure of homework.

The information captured in the homework survey was discussed with members of our ‘Parent Voice Group’ at the Autumn term meeting and other models of homework were shared for the group members   to consider. One model, which the majority of parents were in favour of, included a wider range of homework tasks to be completed across each half term. These tasks included fun and engaging activities outside of English and Maths e.g. making a fruit salad, mapping your journey to school, creating a junk model related to a topic and children choosing how to present their work.

As a result, we have adopted this new approach to homework and below you will find a copy of letters sent to each year group outlining the new home learning expectations. The letters outline key weekly homework tasks, including spellings, and a range of optional activities that will help your child to consolidate their learning across the curriculum.

The new approach to homework has been shared with pupils and each half term the teaching staff discuss the optional activities that can be completed. We hope that your child enjoys them!
